Temporary Closure of the Angus Library and Archive

The Angus Library and Archive will close temporarily from January to October 2026 to all visitors and enquirers.

Continuing high usage levels both in person and online, combined with large amounts of existing and new donations and deposits, have meant that we need to create space and time for the Angus Library team and our volunteers to undertake a variety of critically important tasks and initiate new and exciting projects.

A temporary closure will enable us to carry out these tasks as well as improve the operation of the library and prepare for the college centenary in 2027/2028.

If you have any specific questions or need further details, please feel free to ask!

The Angus Library and Archive will be closed temporarily from January to October 2026.

Reasons for Closure

  • High Usage: The library’s continued high levels of usage by visitors and online enquirers, combined with an increase in donations and deposits, has made it difficult for staff to focus on essential library and archive
  • Critical Tasks: To ensure the ongoing safeguarding and protection of our collections, maximize space, improve accessibility, initiate new projects and prepare for the 2027/2028centenary of the college.

Objectives During the Closure

  • Safeguarding our Collections: We will continue to protect our collections for present and future users by identifying conservation, digitisation and cataloguing needs.
  • Space Maximisation: By carefully assessing what we hold, we can improve and create more space.
  • Improved Accessibility: Closure will enable us to concentrate on updating our website and improving our finding aids, helping us to engage with a wider audience both online and in person.
  • New Projects: Several exciting new projects will be planned during this time.

Tasks to be Undertaken

  • Assessment and Tidying: Clearing and cleaning all rooms, corridors, public, and archival areas.
  • Space Creation: Disposing of duplicates, sending specific material off-site, and offering material elsewhere.
  • Cataloguing: Addressing the backlog of new and existing uncatalogued books and periodicals.
  • Website Updates: Updating the library and archive website and finding aids.
  • Archival Catalogue Work: Rebranding and uploading digitised content to Epexio, our archive catalogue.
  • Mitigation Work: Undertaking recommended fire and flood risk mitigation work.
  • Digitisation Projects: Initiating digitisation projects for our rare and most fragile material.
  • Checking our holdings: To confirm the condition and accessibility of our collections.

Impact on Users

  • Disruption and Inconvenience: We recognise that the temporary closure will cause disruption, and inconvenience, but we hope that our users and supporters will recognise that this is necessary for long-term benefits to the Angus.
  • Volunteer Work: Volunteers will continue their important cataloguing and conservation work during the closure.
